Primitive stalked echinoderms from the Middle Ordovician (Darriwilian) of Bang Song Tho, Kanchanaburi, western Thailand

The Middle Ordovician (Darriwilian) echinoderm fauna of Bang Mueang Song Tho, western Thailand (Pha Phum group, Bo Ngam Formation(?)), includes rare thecae, and common thecal ossicles and columnals, and is dominated by ‘cystoids’. Cheirocrinid glyptocystitoids include Cheirocystella sp. (= Echinoencrinites sp. aff. E. senckenbergii (von Meyer) sensu Wolfart), ‘Cheirocrinus’ sp. and Cheirocrinidae incertae sedis. Hemicosmitoids are composed of Paracaryocrinites kochi (Wolfart), ‘Paracaryocrinites’ sp. and Polycosmites sp. cf. P. kaekeli Wolfart. The aristocystitid Sinocystis sp. cf. S. loczyi Reed is the only diploporite. Columnals of Bystrowicrinus (col.) sp. are probably crinoidal. The fullest determination of the echinoderm biodiversity of this site has been obtained using all specimens from single ossicles to articulated thecae. The limited taphonomic data suggests that the echinoderm assemblage is parauthochthonous. Other echinoderms described from coeval deposits in this region include Stichocystis thailandica Wolfart; Heliocrinites sp. aff. H. qualus Bather (probably a Lophotocystis Paul); Gomphocystites? sp. indet. (= trilobite?); Codiacystis sp. aff. C. bohemicus (Barrande) (= bryozoan?); Aristocystis [sic] sp. A of Paul; and [non] Incertae sedis sp. C of Paul (may not be an echinoderm).

Study Objective
This study aimed to review available disaster training options for health care providers, and to provide specific recommendations for developing and delivering a disaster-response-training program for non-disaster-trained emergency physicians, residents, and trainees prior to acute deployment.
MethodsA comprehensive review of the peer-reviewed and grey literature of the existing training options for health care providers was conducted to provide specific recommendations.
ResultsA comprehensive search of the Pubmed, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane databases was performed to identify publications related to courses for disaster preparedness and response training for health care professionals. This search revealed 7,681 unique titles, of which 53 articles were included in the full review. A total of 384 courses were found through the grey literature search, and many of these were available online for no charge and could be completed in less than six hours. The majority of courses focused on management and disaster planning; few focused on clinical care and acute response.
ConclusionThere is need for a course that is targeted toward emergency physicians and trainees without formal disaster training. This course should be available online and should utilize a mix of educational modalities, including lectures, scenarios, and virtual simulations. An ideal course should focus on disaster preparedness, and the clinical and non-clinical aspects of response, with a focus on an all-hazards approach, including both terrorism-related and environmental disasters.

Accurate reconstruction of the biomass, structure, and productivity of ancient forests from their fossilized remnants remains an interesting challenge in paleoecology. In well-preserved Tertiary fossil Metasequoia forests of Canada's Arctic, in situ stumps and fragments of stems, treetops, and branches contain substantial information about tree dimensions that can be used to determine tree height, stand biomass, and other characteristics such as canopy depth and structure, and the history of stand development. To validate a method for reconstructing the biomass of the Eocene floodplain Metasequoia forests of Axel Heiberg Island, we measured stump diameters and spacing, and stem, branch, and treetop characteristics in living Metasequoia glyptostroboides and Chamaecyparis thyoides stands in ways that simulate the limited measurements that can be made in well-preserved fossil forests in Canada and probably elsewhere. We used those limited measurements to estimate tree height and volume, branch and foliar dry weights, and tree biomass. The estimates derived from the limited data set are usually within 15% of the estimates derived from the methods currently used in forest ecology for determining those metrics in modern forests. Under appropriate conditions, the biomass of ancient forests can be estimated with reasonable confidence.

Abundant fossil plant remains are preserved in the high-latitude middle Eocene deposits of the Buchanan Lake Formation on Axel Heiberg Island, Nunavut Territory, Canada. Intact leaf litter, logs, and stumps preserved in situ as mummified remains offer an opportunity to determine the structure, biomass, and productivity of two Taxodiaceae-dominated forests that grew north of the Arctic Circle (paleolatitude 75–80°N). We excavated fossil tree trunks and treetops to develop equations that describe the height, structure, and mass of the aboveground components of Eocene-age Metasequoia trees. We combined those data with surveys of in situ stumps to determine the structure, biomass, and productivity of two fossil forests, “N” and “HR.” We calculated a canopy height of 40 ± 3 m for the N forest and 25 m ± 2 m for the HR forest. Buried knots in dissected logs and abundant branch-free bole wood indicate that these were tall, closed-canopy forests. Stem tapers indicate that the overstory was of uniform height. Stem volume equaled 2095 m3 ha−1 and stem biomass was 628 Mg ha−1 in the N forest. Volume and biomass in the HR forest were much smaller, 211 m3 ha−1 and 63.3 Mg ha−1, respectively. We estimated understory tree biomass to be 40 Mg ha−1 in the N forest and 3.5 Mg ha−1 in the HR forest. Recovery of seven fossil treetops with exposed branch stubs enabled us to make estimates of branchwood and foliar biomass using allometric equations derived from modern, plantation-grown Metasequoia glyptostroboides. Estimated stand-level branch biomass was 13 and 6.7 Mg ha−1 in the N and HR forests, respectively. Standing foliar biomass was estimated to be 3.2 and 2.1 Mg ha−1 in the N and HR forests, respectively. Using annual ring widths, the reconstructed parabolic stems, and wood density of modern Metasequoia, we calculated annual wood production to be 2.3 Mg ha−1 yr−1 for the N forest and 0.55 Mg ha−1 yr−1 for the HR forest Assuming that the ancient Metasequoia were deciduous like their living relatives, annual aboveground net primary productivity was 5.5 Mg ha−1 yr−1 for the N forest and 2.8 Mg ha−1 yr−1 for the HR forest. Our estimated biomass and productivity values for N are similar to those of modern old-growth forests of the Pacific Northwest of the United States and old-growth coastal Cordillera forests of southern Chile.

Anti-black prejudice affects how some citizens evaluate black candidates. What does it take to reduce the role of prejudice in these evaluations? Using logical implications of relevant psychological phenomena, this article shows that repeated exposure to counter-stereotypical information is insufficient to reduce evaluative prejudice. Instead, citizens must associate this prejudice with adverse effects for themselves in contexts that induce them to rethink their existing racial beliefs. These findings explain important disagreements in empirical prejudice research, as only some empirical research designs supply the conditions for prejudice reduction predicted here. This study also clarifies why similarly situated citizens react so differently to counter-stereotypical information. In sum, we find that prejudice change is possible, but in a far narrower set of circumstances than many scholars claim.

Executive Summary
An energy resource is the first step in the chain that supplies energy services (for a definition of energy services, see Chapter 1). Energy services are largely ignorant of the particular resource that supplies them; however, often the infrastructures, technologies, and fuels along the delivery chain are highly dependent on a particular type of resource. The availability and costs of bringing energy resources to the market place are key determinants to affordable and accessible energy services.
Energy resources pose no inherent limitation to meeting the rapidly growing global energy demand as long as adequate upstream investment is forthcoming – for exhaustible resources in exploration, production technology, and capacity (mining and field development) and, by analogy, for renewables in conversion technologies.
Hydrocarbons and Nuclear
Occurrences of hydrocarbons and fissile materials in the Earth's crust are plentiful – yet they are finite. The extent of the ultimately recoverable oil, natural gas, coal, or uranium is the subject of numerous reviews, yet still the range of values in the literature is large (Table 7.1). For example, the range for conventional oil is between 4900 exajoules (EJ) for reserves to 13,700 EJ (reserves plus resources) – a range that sustains continued debate and controversy. The large range is the result of varying boundaries of what is included in the analysis of a finite stock of an exhaustible resource, e.g., conventional oil only or conventional oil plus unconventional occurrences, such as oil shale, tar sands, and extra-heavy oils.

Background: The orbitofrontal cortex has been implicated as a key component in depression by several imaging studies. This study aims to examine morphometrically glial cell and neuronal density and neuronal volume in the orbitofrontal cortex of late-life major depression patients.
Methods: Post mortem tissue from 13 patients with major depression and 11 matched controls was obtained and analyzed using the optical disector and nucleator methods.
Results: No changes were found in glial cell, pyramidal or non-pyramidal neuron density, or in non-pyramidal and pyramidal neuron volume in the orbitofrontal cortex.
Conclusions: Based on previous findings, this study suggests variability in morphological changes within the orbitofrontal cortex, as well as the prefrontal cortex as a whole.

Background
Late-life depression has been associated with cerebrovascular disease and especially with ischaemic white matter hyperintensities on magnetic resonance imaging. Neuroimaging and morphometric studies have identified abnormalities in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex.
AimsTo examine glial and neuronal density and neuronal volume in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in late-life major depression.
MethodWe used the disector and nucleator methods to estimate neuronal density and volume and glial density of cells in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in a post-mortem study of 17 individuals with late-life major depression and 10 age-matched controls.
ResultsWe found a reduction in the volume of pyramidal neurones in the whole cortex, which was also present in layer 3 and more markedly in layer 5. There were no comparable changes in non-pyramidal neurones and no glial differences.
ConclusionsOverall, we found a decrease in pyramidal neuronal size in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex in late-life depression.

Summary
Introduction
As illustrated throughout this book, Lagrangian data can provide us with a unique perspective on the study of geophysical fluid dynamics, particle dispersion, and general circulation. Drifting buoys, floats, and even a crate-full of rubber ducks or athletic shoes lost in mid-ocean (Christopherson, 2000) may be used to gain insights into ocean circulation. All Lagrangian instruments will be referred to as “drifters” hereafter for simplicity. Because movement of a drifter tends to follow that of a water parcel, the primary attributes of Lagrangian measurements are (i) horizontal coverage due to dispersion in time, (ii) that many of the observed variables obey conservation laws approximately over some lengths of time, and (iii) their ability to trace circulation features such as meanders and vortices at a wide range of spatial scales. Due mainly to inherently irregular spatial distributions, the Lagrangian measurements must first be interpolated for most applications. As we will see, the design of interpolation and mapping schemes that can preserve the Lagrangian attributes is often non-trivial.
To observe finer dynamical details of oceanic and coastal phenomena and to forecast drifter trajectories more accurately (for search-and-rescue operation, spill containment, and so on), Lagrangian data afford a particularly informative and novel perspective if they are combined with a dynamical model, rather than mapped by a standard synoptic-scale interpolation procedure which can smear some details at smaller and faster scales. Data assimilation can be viewed as a methodology for imposing dynamical consistency upon observed data for the purpose of space-time interpolation.

The prevention of unexpected cardiac events in the young remains elusive. Among them, some are lethal. Early identification of life-threatening arrhythmogenic disorders which often manifest in infancy, childhood or even later, may allow initiation of effective preventive therapies. A large prospective study has indicated that some infants with prolongation of the QT interval in the first week of life died suddenly, and would have previously been labelled as victims of the sudden infant death syndrome. Furthermore, in infants with this diagnosis, post-mortem molecular screening has revealed the presence of the long QT syndrome. As an evolution of this background, some European countries have begun to consider the possibility of introducing in their National Health Services the performance of an electrocardiogram during the first month of life in all newborns, as part of a programme for cardiovascular screening. Most adult cardiologists, however, have no or minimal experience with electrocardiograms recorded in infants. Accordingly, the European Society of Cardiology has instituted a Task Force with the objective of creating guidelines for the interpretation of the neonatal electrocardiogram, focusing on the most clinically relevant abnormalities and on the ensuing options for management and referral. The main objective of the present document is to provide adult cardiologists with a practical approach to neonatal electrocardiography, and paediatricians and neonatologists with a tool that should facilitate medical interaction on cardiologic issues. There are important differences between neonatal and adult electrocardiograms. When a cardiologist examines the electrocardiogram of an apparently normal and healthy infant, the focus has to be on distinguishing between patterns that should cause no alarm, and those that require action or additional investigations. To provide clues for this distinction has been the main objective of the members of this Task Force. Whenever possible or appropriate, we have also suggested steps in management.
